Denture Dilemma: What Adhesive is Right for Me?

Whether you have a full or partial set, dentures are a great way to rebuild your smile after suffering tooth loss. But did you know that your jawbone deteriorates when teeth fall out because your body absorbs the bone mass that’s no longer necessary to support them? As a result, your jaw thins which eventually changes the shape of your mouth and face. That means the dentures that once fit like a glove may start to feel loose.

Fortunately, denture adhesive can help. There are many choices, though, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed if you’re not sure what to look for. Keep reading to learn more about the options so you can decide!

What Are the Types of Denture Adhesive

There are multiple kinds of denture adhesives available and learning more about them can help you decide which you’d like to use. Typically, the different options include:

Adhesive Creams:

This glue usually comes in a tube and is applied by squeezing small amounts on your dentures where they connect to your gums. One popular choice is Super Poligrip Original Formula Zinc Free Denture and Partials Adhesive Cream. It uses natural ingredients and essential oils and can provide extra comfort from the friction of loose dentures. This cream boasts a 12-hour hold and reduces the amount of food particles that can become trapped between your gums and dentures. It works best when applied to dentures that are only somewhat loose.

Adhesive Powders:

Denture adhesive powders can also provide a 12-hour hold, although it may not be quite as strong as with creams. That said, it can be easier to apply because you simply sprinkle it over the entire surface of your dentures that connect to your gums. Some kinds are also zinc-free, such as Extra Strength Super Poligrip Denture Adhesive. This type is also recommended for dentures that have a good fit and just need a little extra help to stay put.

Adhesive Strips:

This type works better than the other options on dentures that fit poorly. To use, apply a pre-cut strip to your dentures before putting them into your mouth. It’s already treated with the bonding agent so there’s less mess for you to worry about. In many cases, like with Super Poligrip Comfort Seal, this adhesive also can also create an all-day hold.

Now that you know more about the selections, you can pick an adhesive that works for you. If you continue to have problems with loose dentures even when using these products, however, it may be time to have them relined or replaced. Contact your dentist and schedule an appointment so they can help you determine the best next steps!
